Exercise overview

In this exercise, you're required to configure local Oracle Net Services aliases.

This involves the following tasks:

  • creating a Net Service alias
  • creating a backup service alias

Task 1: Creating a Net Service alias

You are on the Local Naming page in Enterprise Manager. You want to create a Net Service alias - orcl8 - to connect to the database called " orcl.oracle.com". The address of this database is 10.5.163.56 and it uses port 1526.

1. Click Create
2. Enter orcl8 in the Net Service Name field
3. Ensure Use Service Name is selected and enter orcl.oracle.com in the Service Name field
4. Ensure Database Default is selected and click Add
5. Ensure TCP/IP is selected and enter 1526 in the Port field
6. Enter 10.5.163.56 in the Host field
7. Click OK
8. Click OK

Task 2: Creating a backup Net Service alias

Now you need to add a backup address for your Net Service alias that can connect to the database on port 1521 in case the address on port 1526 becomes unavailable. You need to configure it so that addresses are tried in sequence when connecting to the database.

2. Click Edit
3. Click Add
4. Ensure TCP/IP is selected and enter 1521 in the Port field
5. Enter 10.5.163.56 in the Host field and click OK
6. Select Try each address, in order, until one succeeds and click OK
